Ah…. wedding season has begun! And it got started with a bang with Kayla and Mert’s gorgeous wedding last weekend. It threatened rain all afternoon, but we only got a few drops. The cold and dreary skies certainly didn’t dampen anyone’s mood though

I am always amazed by the differences in each one of the weddings I’ve photographed. While they all have similarities, each has their own uniqueness about it. Following the ceremony, we headed out immediately for photos of the happy newlyweds and the bridal party. We had a few locations in mind – but it’s the third one that really made this wedding special. Locals will appreciate this I’m sure…. the entire bridal party had photos taken at the Black Horse Tavern. They used to spend a lot of time there hanging out years ago, so it was only fitting that they relax there for a bit before their reception. I’m not sure when the last time a bridal party had their photos done sitting on the bar there, but it was so much fun.

While Kayla is from Miramichi, her husband Mert is originally from Turkey – but they met in Halifax. While they came from completely different cultures, something brought these two together… and the result was a wedding day full of love and happiness. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a groom so anxious to kiss his bride during the ceremony . Once the dance started, everyone let loose – and you can see from the photos that fun was definitely had by all. They even had a belly dancer, which is Turkish tradition.

These lovebirds are on their honeymoon somewhere nice and warm (unlike their wedding day), but I know they’re anxiously awaiting some photos from their big day. So without further adieu, here are some of my favourites so far:

Has it been 2 weeks already?! I was hoping for something more from nature this week, but was instead inspired to use a ring shot from this weekend’s past wedding. I took this shot in the most unusual of locations, too…. on a table in a local drinking establishment – but you’ll have to wait for the full sneak peek from Kayla and Mert’s wedding to hear about that one . In the meantime, here are their stunning rings…

For this week’s macro post, I chose to use some close-ups of a gorgeous engagement ring, from a recent engagement session (see here). I showcased 2 photos of it with that post …. well here’s two more. I love how mixing it up with the old broken glass gives it such a different feel than my typical ring shots.

Next up is my amazingly talented friend Denean Melcher… seriously, the girl needs to start selling some of her macro work. If you haven’t checked out her stuff you really should, it’s awesome. That goes for Cathy and Stacy too… This group I’m in has some serious talent!!

I first met this adorable family back in the fall. Ella was only 9 months then (you’ll find that post here)…. fast forward to last weekend, and the nearly 16 month old Ella and her parents were enjoying some springtime sunshine on the beach. It was pretty chilly the last time we were out, so this was definitely a welcome change! I love watching kids grow up from behind my lens…. and I noticed so many changes in Ella. Obviously she’s grown, but she’s walking, and has so much more hair now (look at those piggies!). She was pretty serious for the most part, but we did manage to get a few smiles out of her . Here are some of my favourites from our session together:

This is the second session I photographed last weekend. It was the first real weekend where it felt like spring – so the timing couldn’t have been any better to get out with Katie and David to take some engagement photos.

We had planned our session quite far in advance, not knowing what the weather would have been like – and since David lives away and doesn’t get home very frequently, we were very fortunate to have some gorgeous warm sunshine. We went back to an abandoned property I had discovered on one of my little photo excursions (you’ll find my photos from that here and here). We ventured into the 2 buildings for some pics too, to take advantage of the rustic interiors.

When photographing couples for their engagement, many will admit to me that it’s the first time they’ve had photos done. They usually feel awkward in front of the camera… especially the guys. Well, I’m not sure if this was the case for these two, but you certainly didn’t look awkward – you two look like models to me. What a fantastic job you did! Here are some of my favourites so far…

I have 2 more ring shots that I’ll feature in my macro post tomorrow – but this is one of my favourites. Isn’t her ring stunning?! (who am I kidding, I love all engagement rings )

I saved my favourite 5 for the end….

David and Katie’s wedding is just after Christmas this year, so we likely won’t get much in the way of sunshine-y photos – so it was nice to get some for this session with them. I hope you two enjoy this sneak peek! There’s lots more to come!

Let me start out by saying how thankful I am that SPRING is finally here! It was great to get out and have some fun, sunny shoots last weekend. The first one I did was Brittney, who is graduating from JMH this year. Graduation is such an exciting time… and it goes by so quickly. I’m so honoured that I got to take photos to preserve this fleeting time in your life! You were an absolute joy to work with, Brittney. Our initial location may not have worked out, but I’m still very happy with the results. We were going for a mix of traditional, with lots of non-traditional grad photos… here are some of my favourites so far:

A few days ago I posted some shots from a local abandoned property – well today I’m posting the second part of those photos. These are my favourite macro shots from that outing. Soon I will have session photos from the same location…. so stay tuned!

This last photo was what looked to us like a bullet hole – but who knows. Who would have thought that a piece of broken glass could look so interesting up close?

Last week I had the chance to get out with a dear friend, in search of somewhere interesting to shoot, just for ourselves. We didn’t really know where we would end up – we just drove – but an old barn that was falling down caught our eye from the road. We walked in a really long driveway, and found the coolest property I’ve seen in awhile. There are 2 abandoned houses – the windows are broken out, the doors are missing or falling off – and yet there were curtains still hanging. They had some furniture remaining, and some interesting wallpaper too. Then there was that barn…. well you know I love old barns

Note the date on this newspaper that was just lying on the ground…. 1973!

This next image is probably one of my favourite personal images to date…. there’s something very moody and mysterious about it that I love.

When I saw this place, I couldn’t help but wonder, what was the story behind it? Who lived here? When and why did they leave? It was very mysterious there – seeing a postcard that originated in 1910 (!!!), and a newspaper that was dated August 25th, 1973, only added to that mystery.

I was very fortunate to get a surprise delivery of flowers from my hubby recently. We didn’t have an occasion to celebrate – they were “just because”. Given how drab it still looks outside, I was very excited to have a splash of spring colour in my life! They were the perfect inspiration for this week’s macro post:

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again…. I LOVE black and white photographs. There are certain photos that I can only visualize in black and white. The colour version may be lovely, but somehow the black and white finish just makes it more edgy, more timeless…. whatever it does, it definitely transforms the photo into a work of art (in my opinion). One thing is for sure… the feel of the photo can completely change.

I got a new lens recently – a Lensbaby – and I absolutely love it and am frustrated by it at the same time. It is completely manual focus, which is pretty challenging. You may take 100 shots and have 5 that are something you would actually do something with. I love the challenge though, so I’m looking forward to playing with it more and more.

Spring is technically here, but it certainly doesn’t look like it! I was hoping by this time of year I would be photographing something a little more “springy”… it ended up working out though – because I ended up with some of my favourite personal shots I’ve done in awhile. The black and white finish really just suited the winter forest scenery. I think it has a lot more impact this way… what do you think?
